Since it has gotten more popular a few years ago, you have probably also heard of coconut oil. At first when all the articles about its wonderful health benefits started popping up, it was quite hard to find in the stores and could be pretty pricey as well. Luckily, by now it is much easier to get our hands on a jar of good quality coconut oil – even most supermarkets sell it nowadays. Last week you introduced you to all the different types of coconut oil to help you choose the best kind for your specific purpose of use. We concluded that you should always buy organic coconut oil to avoid the remaining chemicals that might be left over from the pesticides used for non-organic ones. Furthermore, we recommended refined –ideally expeller pressed- types for cooking and raw coconut oil for other uses, outside of the kitchen. But what can you exactly do with coconut oil apart from using it for cooking? This is the question we are going to answer today!
Hearing it for the first time, it might be unexpected, but coconut oil is actually great for keeping your hair strong and healthy. It is particularly suitable for damaged, dry hair as its fatty acids help soften the hair.
The simplest way to use it is by warming up a bit of coconut oil in your hands, then applying it to the ends of your hair. Carefully comb is through your hair, then wrap up your hair in a towel and let it sit for 15-20 minutes. When the time is up, gently wash your hair with shampoo and enjoy the soft and conditioned hair!
You can also try out making your own coconut oil hair spray at home for healthier ends. In a spray bottle mix about one to two tablespoons of coconut oil in its liquid form (warm it up a bit!) with one cup of distilled water and some vitamin e oil. Spray it on the ends of your hair after washing and before drying it – it can be especially useful for colored, bleached hair that needs extra nourishment.
If you don’t like using store bought make-up removers full of harmful chemicals, you will love trying this hack! Coconut oil is actually a great eye make-up remover! Put a bit of coconut oil on a cotton puff and gently rub the make-up off your eyes. It not only removes all the eyeshadows, liners and the rest, but moisturizes the eye are too.
Both on your body and your face, coconut oil can act as an amazing natural moisturizer, keeping your skin soft. Just rub it in as you would do with any similar product and wait for your skin to absorb. Pro tip: on your legs you can even use it as a shaving cream for super soft legs! But especially if you are putting it on your face, it is really important to choose a high quality, organic product, so that you don’t actually harm your skin with chemicals in the process.
You can easily get the same moisturizing effect on your lips – great in the winter time and colder, windy weather when we are prone to suffer from chapped lips. You can either apply with your fingers or a Q-tip to enjoy soft and healed lips within minutes.
As you can see, there are many amazing uses of coconut oil apart from that for cooking. However, it cannot be emphasized enough that it is incredibly important to choose a high quality organic coconut oil in order to safely enjoy the wonderful benefits of this great product.
