Lately more and more people are deciding to ditch meat and all other food products from animal sources in hope of a healthier, more sustainable life for our globe and safety for our animal friends. By being vegan people believe to not only save the lives of animals that are usually bred to be stock animals, but also prevent cruelty they often suffer.
Being vegan and completely removing all animal products from one’s diet has many health benefits for us humans as well. The cholesterol levels of vegans tend to be much lower than those of meat eaters’ and thus also lowers the risk for diseases such as obesity, stroke or heart attacks.
For those who chose to become vegan, there are some things they need to know and always pay attention to. There are certain macro- and micronutrients that people usually get from consuming meat or dairy products, and after omitting those vegans need to make smart and conscious choices to include them in their diet. One of the most important macronutrients vegans have to pay attention to is protein: lentils, beans, tofu, soy milk and yoghurt and other nut milks are great sources of protein for vegans. Other important micronutrients are calcium (can be found in broccoli, collard greens, almonds or sesame) and iron (from soy beans, lentils, kidney beans or chickpeas).
Eating vegan foods can be just as unhealthy though, so try to make smart choices, take the time to prepare your meals yourself and use healthy, whole foods instead of vegan, but super processed, packaged alternatives.
